Nissan’s electric van to be produced in Spain

Nissan has confirmed the production of the e-NV200 in Barcelona, Spain in the 2013 Fiscal Year. Nissan’s fiscal year begins in April, so production could begin any time after that.

The Spanish plant will be the sole manufacturer of the vehicle for global consumption. Based on the running gear of the LEAF, no major deviations from this powertrain are expected in the e-NV200. This would provide similar performance and range for the van as for the LEAF, though if used in commercial environments with heavy loads range will be reduced. Nissan anticipates both commercial and personal users as customers for the e-NV200.

In addition to other real-world tests, Nissan has placed e-NV200’s into the hands of British Gas for evaluation. Vans were operated at the maximum gross vehicle weight to determine which of its routes it would be suited for. British Gas is looking to have 10 percent of their 14,000 vehicle fleet operating under electric power by the end of 2015.

No word yet on the expected annual production of the new electric van, but we expect fleet owners to take a hard look at it due to low cost of operation compared to traditional petroleum fueled vehicles.
