Up to ten percent of production lost or damaged due to quake
In the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami that ravaged the country, Nissan is doing its best to move forward. Production has fallen by over 50%, although word is that Toyota and Honda were more severely impacted. The fact is, any manufacturer of any product in Japan, and many abroad, have been severely impacted. Products made in the United States with parts sourced in Japan have also been impacted, and will continue to be so for some time.
Nissan produces Nissan and Infiniti vehicles in three primary facilities in Japan – Tochigi, Oppama, and Kyushu. Kyushu was an example of what is happening in many areas of the world that rely on Japanese made parts. The plant itself was undamaged, but production was halted due to lack of supplies.
In March, Nissan was the first Japanese maker to evaluate their factories and products for radiation levels. All readings taken to date have shown safe levels. Nissan has focused on vehicle safety prior to being mandated to do so by government bodies for many years. It comes as no surprise that they are being cautious on their employee’s and customer’s behalf now.
