Estimated delivery week of March 25, 2011

Red San Diego LEAF

4 week notice on Nissan’s dashboard

It was with some surprise this morning when we opened our Nissan LEAF dashboard to find a new estimated delivery date – week of March 25, 2011. Which only heightened our confusion regarding the delivery of our LEAF. March 25, 2011 is a Friday. So does Nissan’s estimated delivery date mean that it will come during the week that contains March 25? Or does it mean that our LEAF will come during Nissan’s fiscal week of March 25 – March 31? Our guess is the latter, as almost everything done from the corporate side is based on their fiscal year. (Just so you know – these initial delivery dates have been changing on an ongoing basis for those who have already received their cars, and for those of us in our particular situation. I will not update every single change (if any) received from Nissan. We will see how closely they come to providing our car on their first delivery projection.)

With the posting of an actual week for our estimated delivery date, the “enable CARWINGS” tab has now opened on our LEAF “my account” dashboard. Clicking on the “get started” button takes us to the CARWINGS activation page. The first page that we see offers up the VIN of our new LEAF! It lives! We can not ascertain from the information provided the production date of the car. When we know this, we will pass it along as another means of determining status.

If you agree to accept the terms of the CARWINGS account, the system then asks if you have your LEAF yet, or not. As we do not, we selected the “no, I do not have my LEAF” button. We next see a PIN and password page that allows us to print out our CARWINGS PIN and password, which we will need to enter into the vehicles navigation system at delivery. This page also allows us to “set notifications”. On this page one can choose to receive alerts about the following items:

  • Plug-in Reminder
  • Charge On
  • Charge Complete
  • Vehicle Status
  • Climate Control

One can choose to receive these alerts via Text Message, E-mail, or both. This page also collects the necessary information to contact you and asks for your request for a Global CARWINGS Nickname. Once all of this information is entered, it asks if you would like to check your status. Naturally, we said yes. Since we don’t have our LEAF yet and have not yet entered the username and password, we have no access to CARWINGS information yet.

If you have been accepted into the EV Project, a requirement of the project is to accept the CARWINGS agreement.

On January 20, we wrote about our delivery expectations. In that article we expected delivery to take place in mid-March. It seems we were about one to two weeks premature. Our hint is to check the status of your “edit” color button in the “Order your Nissan LEAF” tab under the “Order Summary” button. Once you can no longer change the color of your LEAF order, your car is on the verge of production. Based on our delivery date received this morning (subject to change), we will modify our original forecast to now expect your LEAF in 8 to 10 weeks after the “edit” color button goes away. This forecast is on the outside. We feel that once production gears up and the initial inevitable early feedback fixes are incorporated into the production line, rather than performed at the Vehicle Processing Center (VPC) increasing their workload, that delivery 7 to 8 weeks after the “edit” button goes away will become the norm.

We have created a new category called “Our Delivery” which can be accessed in the Navigation Bar atop each page, or via the Categories area in the right-hand column to track the progress of the delivery of our LEAF (Or to send others a link ;)), from its order date on September 3 to delivery.

    Ernie,

I am very happy for you! I had an interesting thing happen with Nissan notifications. I got an e-mail saying my Leaf will be delivered in the month of May. The dashboard said the same thing but the next day the dashboard switched back to saying “pending” it has not changed since. I wonder what this means? Did you have anything like this happen to you?

    • Ernie Hernandez (LEAFguy) says:

Thanks Frank. My dashboard went from pending, to month of March, to Week of March 25. Others have had the same experience that you mention though, so not likely uncommon.

  2. stanley says:

Congrats!!!!! My dashboard started out with an April delivery and now reads May

  3. stanley says:

Do you think that your car is at Long beach or still at Opama?

    • Ernie Hernandez (LEAFguy) says:

stanley, thanks. I think my car is still in Japan. Transit doesn’t take that long, and I would imagine at VPC (the port) for as short a time as possible. I have more info that I’ll post later today.

Week of March 25, 2011 is the dashboards way of saying “your LEAF will be delivered to you on March 25, 2011. However, it might be a day or so sooner than that or it could possibly be a day or so later than that”. They know exactly when it will arrive at the VPC, but they aren’t sure when the port mods will be complete and when transportation will be available to deliver your LEAF to your dealership. Don’t be surprised if, once your LEAF is being processed through the VPC, the March 25, 2011 date begins to dance around a bit. It’s normal. The dates are kinda squishy.

Have your dealer email you a “screen scrape” of the dealer dashboard for your LEAF. It’s fun to have and there is some interesting information in there you don’t have in your dashboard. The actual date your LEAF was built, for example. Also, bring the CARWINGS PIN and password with you to the dealership and the LEAF tech will set up your CARWINGS for you.

Thanks indy… it will be useful to know what the production date is so that I can pass it along.

Hmmm, interesting, my dashboard went from “Pending” -> April 5th -> April 8th and now states March 30th? I’ve opened my carwings portal account, but have been unable to login from my iphone even though I can do it via a browser.
    My Vin # 712 and I RAQ Sept. 7, 2010.

    • Ernie Hernandez (LEAFguy) says:

curt – Welcome to Living LEAF. You will find that your estimated delivery date will move around depending on where the vehicle is in the delivery process. We are trying to suss out the details to get a better handle on the timeline. CARWINGS seems to be on a level somewhere between vaporware and production software. Hopefully when your car is in your garage, it will be accessible from either. Based on the numbers of LEAFs headed this way, yours is likely on the boat, or perhaps at the VPC by now according to some.
