Nissan to add LEAF to Certified Pre-Owned program

With early adopters trading in their 2011 LEAFs for the upgraded 2013 model Nissan found itself with a growing inventory of used LEAFs. Faced with the question of how to make them more attractive to used car buyers, Nissan decided to add the model to the Certified Pre-Owned program.

One of the benefits is the extension of the powertrain warranty – as is the case with a Certified Pre-Owned gasoline powered vehicle. In the case of the LEAF the standard powertrain and EV systems warranty is 60 months or 60,000 miles. These are extended to 7 years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first. Where this is a significant benefit for a gasoline powered vehicle, the much simpler electric motor and one-speed reduction gear transmission should require significantly fewer repairs.

Other benefits include a 167 point quality inspection, 90-day CARFAX buyback guarantee, and 24 hour emergency roadside assistance. The last could be helpful as it might replace a costly annual roadside assistance plan. Vehicles eligible for the program must meet the same requirements as any other car the Nissan accepts into the program. To be a Certified Pre-Owned LEAF the vehicle must be in service for less than five years and have less than 60,000 miles. In addition, the traction battery must show a minimum of 9 bars (of 12) of remaining battery capacity. Special finance rates will be available through Nissan Motor Acceptance Corporation.
