Competition improves the breed

Long time readers will know that we have a bent toward the motorsports world in our background. Motorsports competition can take many forms. Here we will introduce you to the e-miglia, run for only the second time in 2011, one year after the inaugural event.

In our web wanderings we have just discovered the running of the e-miglia, based loosely on the mille-miglia (1,000 mile) rally. The original mille-miglia ran as a racing competition from Brescia, Italy to Rome and back from 1927 until 1957, when spectator and participant injuries and deaths brought the competition to an end. The mille-miglia rally began in 1958 as a largely street-legal speed event, though the rally was discontinued after a few years. Since 1977 the rally has resumed as essentially a street-legal speed event on the original route with some competition stages thrown in. Basing the event on historical vehicles also provides another level of interest for spectators.

The e-miglia is run through four countries – Germany, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. Rather than to try to tell you about it, we will refer to you one of the drivers for his perspective of the five day event recently concluded. We hope that you find it as fascinating to read as we did.
