Or why doesn’t anyone fact check anymore?
One problem that exists as a result of internet communication is that someone somewhere writes something that is factually incorrect, but it is widely read, and others repeat the information without checking the facts and pretty soon… the Nissan LEAF is based (loosely or otherwise) on the Versa.
We were reading a blog post earlier and although the poster did not say that the LEAF was based on the Versa, three comments in response to the post made that statement. In this case, we don’t know if all three independently had this thought, or if the second and third reference followed the lead of the first, but in any case, you see our point. Just to set the record straight, direct from the Nissan 2011 LEAF press kit:
A Dedicated EV Platform, Innovative Battery Design
The front-wheel drive Nissan LEAF utilizes an all-new dedicated EV platform with batteries housed in the floor for optimum vehicle packaging and weight distribution. The highly rigid body design includes a rigid-mounted battery frame, which helps provide greater body rigidity compared to a conventional compact car. LEAF rides on a 106.3-inch wheelbase, with a 175.0-inch overall length, 69.7-inch width and 61.0-inch height.
That’s not to say that other vehicles might not use the LEAF platform. One year ago last month Infiniti announced a luxury, four seat, high performance electric vehicle. Their more recent release added a fifth seat. That vehicle will likely use LEAF underpinnings. Beyond these two, Nissan also has plans for an electric light commercial vehicle and an urban commuter.
