Just hours ago I received an email from Nissan saying that our application to be considered for the U.S. Government’s EV Project has been approved. Partial language of the email reads as follows:
You’ve been approved for your home charging unit and installation as part of the U.S. Government’s EV Project.You will be contacted by ECOtality in the near future to discuss the next steps and approximately a month before delivery of your Nissan LEAF to schedule the installation of your home charging dock.

Briefly, the EV Project will install home charging stations encompassing 5,700 LEAF vehicles and 2,600 Chevrolet Volt vehicles. The original project included 4,700 Nissan LEAFs. On June 17, an expansion of the project was announced to include an additional 1,000 LEAFs and 2,600 Volts. The original project would provide chargers in Seattle, Portland, San Diego, Phoenix/Tucson and the state of Tennessee. The expansion now includes Los Angeles and Washington, DC.

I have also been advised that I was selected to receive a charger (Level 2, 220volt) under the US Gov EV project, at no cost to me. I reserved my car on 5/14/10, here in San Diego, and am tentatively scheduled by Nissan to place a firm order for the Leaf sometime in January, 2011; so, ECOtality should be contacting me in sufficient time to have the charging station installed before Christmas. I’m not an electrician, but expect that the installation should be quite simple, since I have existing 220V service in my main panel, with room for another 220V circuit. The car I’ve reserved will have level 3 charging capability, in order to use commercial charging stations. About 90% of my driving will be within 50mi of my home, so I expect the Leaf to be my “main” source of transportation.
Neil, thanks for the info. I think many reservationists are anxiously awaiting further word. There is a video on the Nissan website that shows installation of their EVSE. The ECOtality unit should be similar.
