DC fast charging comes to SoCal

Mitsubishi Solar Powered EV Charge Station

Mitsubishi Solar Powered EV Charge Station

Powered by the sun

With the impending launch of the Mitsubishi I, Mitsu is making ready ahead of time. What a novel concept!

Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) has installed and now debuted a solar powered charging station with multiple EVSE units at its Cypress, CA (Orange County) headquarters. The nicely styled carport shaded by 96 photovoltaic modules providing 175 watts of power each, offers 120 volt, 220 volt and DC quick charge options. The DC quick charger uses the CHAdeMO connector found on the LEAF, as well as the upcoming Mitsu I.

Southern California LEAF drivers are already salivating over the opportunity to use the facility, but one wonders what the proper protocol might be – “Pardon me… might we use some of your electricity to charge your competitors product? They have installed nothing like this yet.” (Hint, hint).

The location of the DC charging station is its most important part. This is what I have e-mailed to Congressman Issa.

    Dear Congressman Issa,

You are the Congressman for a small but unique piece of land that could change the economics of the world for the better. The Nissan Leaf that I own cannot go from San Diego to Los Angeles without a two hour recharge of its batteries. The all electric car has only one drawback. It is the start of the demise of piston power transportation throughout the world. Industries that depend on piston power cars have found a way to kill the electric car and you, and only you, can stop them.

These are the facts as far as I know them.

    1. There are over 3,000 DC rapid charging stations in Japan. There are none here.
    2. The DC rapid charging station is about ten times faster than the AC charging station like those found at places like Walgreen’s.
    3. The Basilone Road overpass is about midway between San Diego and Los Angeles with easy access to Interstate 5 in both directions.
    4. This 50 foot by 20 foot unused land is part of Camp Pendleton and in your district.
    5. There is a power pole by the road with high voltage lines at the west side of the overpass.
    6. Grant money is available for a DC rapid charging station as well as for its installation.
    7. The Public Utility Commission has imposed a $5,000 a month charge on new electric customers like this DC rapid charging station.

What is needed from you, is the use of this land owned by the Federal Government and an exemption for this one location from the Public Utility Commission oversight.

Like the nail that held on the horseshoe that was used by Paul Revere, only you can stop the piston power forces.

Michael – Welcome to Living LEAF. You have crafted a well thought out presentation of how Congressman Issa can influence the adoption of the electric car in California – more specifically, his district. We encourage other readers in his district to follow your lead. If our elected representatives truly represent their constituency, our voices should make a difference.
